The 16x16x1 nominal return takes a filter that actually measures 15 1/2" x 15 1/2" x 3/4", and this Aerostar matches that spec. Square 16x16 returns are common in compact residential air handlers and some older furnaces. MERV 8 is the standard choice for households without pets or specific allergy concerns - it catches dust, lint, and pollen at the lowest static pressure across the filter. MERV 11 covers pet dander, smoke residue, and most common allergens. MERV 13 takes care of fine particulates down to the virus-carrier size range, useful in homes with respiratory issues or in wildfire-affected regions. Pleated synthetic construction gives this filter substantially more surface area than a flat fiberglass throwaway. The electrostatic charge in the media catches smaller particles than the weave would mechanically. Manufactured by Con-Air Industries in Orlando, Florida. The cardboard frame is reinforced to hold shape under blower suction - one of the more common failure modes in cheaper filters is frame collapse, which lets unfiltered air bypass the media entirely. A standard MERV 8 or 11 in residential use runs 60 to 90 days between changes. MERV 13 clogs faster and wants a change closer to every 30 to 60 days under typical residential conditions.
