How to Measure Your Filter
Steps 1 & 2
Measuring Length and Width (L x W). (If your filter is not a square, the smallest measurement goes first).

Step 3
Measure the thickness (Depth) of your filter from front to back.

Step 4
Put Your measurements together (L x W x D).

Actual Size
A filter’s true dimensions.
Example: 19.75” x 19.75” x 1”
Nominal Size
Rounded numbers used by manufacturers.
Example 20” x 20” x 1”

What is a MERV Rating?
MERV ratings let you know the efficiency and level of filtration that an air filter can handle under normal circumstances. The higher the MERV rating, the finer the particles are that are filtered our of the air in your home. Many air filter retailers use MERV or a similar rating to rate their air filters.

About MERV, MPR and FPR Rating

MERV Rating is the primary rating system used in the industry, both domestically and internationally. Established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers, MERV rates a filter’s ability to capture and hold particles and pollutants.

MPR Rating is a rating system developed by 3M. It rates the manufacturer’s Filtrete product line and their ability to capture airborne particles smaller than 1 micron.

FPR Rating is a rating system developed by The Home Depot for brands sold through their stores, including Honeywell. It utilizes a color code and number scale (4 to 10) that closely resembles the MERV rating.
FAQs
A MERV rated 14x14x1 air filter provides excellent filtration, trapping microscopic pollutants like bacteria and smoke. Newer HVAC systems are built to support filters with higher MERV ratings, however, older units might struggle and have limited circulation and performance. If your system seems like it's strained, a filter with a lower MERV rating might be a good solution to ensure it doesn't get overburdened.
Home HVAC systems function better when air filters allow air to circulate and effectively trap airborne particles. A MERV-rated high efficiency 14x14x1 filter can safely remove them and provide filtration, but if your system can’t handle increased resistance, it will use more energy to work. To ensure it will safely do the job, check the specifications for your HVAC unit to determine if your setup supports an air filter with a higher MERV rating to prevent performance issues.
The durability of a 14x14x1 AC filter depends on how much dust accumulates, if you have smokers or pets in your household, and how often your HVAC system runs. Filters can last up to 90 days, but sometimes need to be replaced sooner. Check your air filter periodically to determine when it's clogged or discolored because you may need to switch it out sooner to achieve the best airflow.
The ideal MERV rating for an air filter balances air quality and HVAC system efficiency. It provides better air purification when your filter isn’t restrictive. MERV 8 and MERV 11 filters will control allergens and dust, while still allowing sufficient airflow in compatible HVAC systems, without causing strain. Higher MERV rated filters can be used, but make sure your HVAC unit can handle the resistance if you decide to use them.
Finding the right MERV-rated filter to use in your home depends on your indoor air quality needs and the capacity of your HVAC system. A 14x14x1 furnace filter that traps pollutants ensures you’ll have more breathable air while ensuring your HVAC system functions properly. Selecting a MERV rated filter that matches your HVAC unit’s capabilities without restricting airflow is important so it doesn't cause premature aging and need repair
A 14x14x1 filter with a high efficiency MERV rating can capture allergens and mold spores while reducing respiratory symptoms. Using 14x14x1 air filters with higher MERV ratings will give you the best filtration to prevent irritants from triggering your allergies and asthma, keeping your air cleaner and healthier. Make sure it fits correctly and is compatible with your specific HVAC system for the highest level of efficiency and to keep contaminants from spreading in your airspace.
